It was Saturday 23:50 when I started this

Slipstreaming XP means integrating a major update from Microsoft into your original Windows XP CD. I’ll use SP3 as an example. The technique below works – I’m also looking at a tool called nLite to do this plus some other stuff but haven’t tested it yet.

  •  First download the SP3 update from the microsoft catalog site (see page 1)
  • Put your original XP CD in the system and copy all the files from it into an new folder – say C:\XP
  • Copy the SP3 update file into another new folder – say C:\SP3
  • To make things a bit easier, rename this SP3 update file to xpsp3.exe
  • From the START Menu select Run then type in CMD to get a DOS type window
  • In the window type “C:” (without the quotes) then press Enter, then type “CD SP3” (enter) then “xpsp3.exe -x:C:\SP3”
  • This extracts all the files from the update and stores them in the SP3 folder
  • Now type each of the following (followed by hit enter key) “CD SP3” “CD i386” “CD update” “update -s:C:\XP” – this updates the original XP files in the folder XP with the SP3 updates
  • Now use ISO Buster to extract the bootable (usually invisible) bit from the original XP CD (it’s called microsoft corporation.img or some such) and store it somewhere you can find it
  • Using that image as the bootable image and the stuff in the XP folder as data, you can use something like gBurner to create a bootable CD of your updated XP system.
  • There, aren’t you glad you read all that! If your still concious, you could go on to add oustanding updates with RyanVM Integrator – there are other slipstreaming options to do – just google XP slipstreaming and see what you get
